Hello hello, now where did we leave off… ahhh, yes…how to make your bed: the designer-y way (but without all the fuss!). The bed is SO IMPORTANT – hint: “bedroom” the main focus of the room and where you will rejuvenate after each day. Your bed needs to be comfy not fussy and of course beautiful. We will give you the best tips on how to make your bed in the most desirable way so your apartment feels like home. Now lets make that bed that is sitting on your gorgeous rug! Remember when I mentioned your room being layered? Well the rug is the first step – and now the actual layers of the bed are next. This will make a HUGE difference on how your room feels.
Step 1: Bed Skirt – literally, a skirt for your bed. If your bed is not framed with a footboard and side rails, this decorative component will help hide the unsightly mattress, box spring, railing and legs. (Plus all the mess under the bed). It lays directly UNDER your mattress and ON your box spring. A nice light weight linen will provide a nice elegant feel.
Step 2: GET GOOD BED SHEETS!!! This is essential to feeling comfortable in your bed. Pay attention to the percentage of cotton content vs. the thread count. Purchase a neutral color – White (our favorite because it feel like a hotel /spa) light gray, taupe or oatmeal. IF you do want colorful sheets they are best for a guest bedroom or kid rooms. Now it’s time to put your super comfy sheets on the bed. Here is one style that looks super clean and put together. I like to pull the bed sheet all the way to the top of the bed and then fold it over about a foot or so. Then tuck the side of the sheets under the bed (all 3 sides). Check out the bedding in the picture bellow – this is how to make your bed look sexy!
Step 3: The covers!! Okay this is a super personal step…how do you like to sleep? With a lot of blankets and weight on top of you to keep you warm because you crank down the AC at night? Or are you low maintenance and one blanket / duvet will suffice? Or maybe you love blankets and your significant other would be totally fine with JUST a sheet – yeah I said that right. Which ever the case my be here are a few ways to make your bed look fabulous!
- You have a quilt / comforter as the bottom layer and duvet on top only folded a little past the quilt to still show color & pattern
- You only have a comforter or quilt (maybe its summer time) BUT fold it down past the sheet – This makes the bed look inviting
- You have the quilt and then another quilt or duvet folded at the end of the bed – for those random chilly nights
- You have a duvet + insert as your main layer with a foot / duvet runner draped at the end of the bed
Step 4: Pillows!!! General Pillows: Not the pretty that show ones BUT the pillows you will most likely sleep on. Start with these as a base, side-by-side, closest to your headboard or you can stack them. (These need to be the same color as your sheets.) Next pillows are the Euro Shams: An oversized (24”x 24” or bigger), decorative, square pillow used to layer and create interest (they also hide your sleeping pillows). Depending on your bed size you’d line 2- 3 of these in front of your standard pillow (or behind). An effortless way to create an elegant look!
Because I could go on and on about pillow layouts, below are two diagrams that give you a visual of how to properly pair different sizes of pillows (sleeping + decorative).
Now that we’ve talked about each layer and the different ways you can arrange your bed, it’s time to go out and make it happen!!
