Okay, so this isn’t really a post about INTERIOR design, per se, but in a round-a-bout sort of way, it may turn out to be. So hold on, buckle up, and get ready, I’m gonna take a sharp turn. I saw this pin and HAD to re-pin it to my “Yup. That’s My Style” board, because I’ve finally come to terms with just what it says.
For the longest
time, I hated, and I mean HATED when people would call me “weird” (or for those who were a little more sensitive in their delivery, “quirky” was the select term). But now? I have totally embraced it. So much so, that the quirkiness is kind of coming out of the corners at work and wriggling into my brand. As in I’m not an “Interior De-si-nah,” (you know, one who raises their nose and pooh-pooh’s anything that isn’t over the top expensive or trendy) but rather I’m a “Design Junkie”, which I think is much more fun, don’t you? Yes, I’ve dreamt about being Jan Showers because I adore her aesthetic, and she is this polished, petite and beautiful blonde woman who jet sets around the world for work, has two books published and just epitomizes the term “glamorous interiors”. Then I looked in the mirror to compare: my b@@bs are way too big, my smile too toothy, she is classy and I am sassy…and while my designs are pretty awesome, I acknowledge we’re just not in the same league. I get it. And I’m SURE that I say things out loud that she wouldn’t even dare THINK. (Disclaimer, I’ve never met Jan, so these are all just my assumptions based on the way she presents herself and her design firm. I hope that if I do ever meet her, she doesn’t burp out loud or something – because that would totally break my heart.)
Anyway, I guess my opening sentence about this post maybe being about interior design, and maybe not, is that I think that not only does a home have to have a design to make sense and keep you on track with function in your every day activities, so does one’s life. A design for living. You can’t be trying to live a life that doesn’t match YOUR interior. Right? Or you’re gonna hate it. It’s
why we climb into the minds of our clients and figure out who they are before we even envision a design for their personal space. Because we are all different, and we all have weirdness-es (I just made that word up – it’s weird in plural) and that is so super cool once we get over trying to present ourselves as perfect and “normal” – whatever that is. We’re flawed. We’re weird. We’re all uniquely awesome. I call it your “you-ness”. I’ve learned to love mine. I hope you love yours. I’ll bet Jan loves hers. So I’m done now. Just a rambling inspired by a Pin on embracing our selves and designing a life with what we’re gifted with because yes, weirdness is a personal gift.
Not all of my Pins on Pinterest make me this philosophical. And I can prove it if you click on over to my Pinterest profile and follow me HERE.
Oh, and if you want me to climb into your brain and design a space to capture your weirdness, I can let mine go for a little bit while I’m working on your project.
