It’s Thanksgiving week and I’m brimming with excitement for the upcoming holiday season. We put our Christmas tree up last night and while we won’t decorate it until after Thanksgiving, but it got me feeling a little more festive. And while this IS the time of year to be thankful, I really try to take it as a chance to re-energize my practice of being grateful.
Being grateful is intentional. It is like a muscle that you have to work in order to develop. It is LOOKING for the good, even in bad situations. Or just noticing the smallest things in your life that really are pretty cool if you pay attention.
The happiest people I know are those who see the glass half full (and even if it was half empty, they would be grateful there was at least something in the glass!). There is something amazing about always being able to find something to be grateful for, wouldn’t you say? Because even though we don’t always get what we want, there are people who will never ever have even a teeny tiny bit of the blessings we have every day.
Running water? Yes, thank you. A home with heat? Yes, thank you. Food in my belly? Yes, thank you. And so forth.
As we head into Thanksgiving this week, I challenge you to spend a moment each day to list 3 things you’re grateful for. And if you feel crazy, continue the practice each day. Write ONE down in a grateful journal for a year and if you are having a crummy day, crack it open and read a few of the entries you noted. You’ll feel happier immediately!
Do you have a practice for being mindfully grateful? I would love to hear it!
