I believe we can all design our own lives, maybe not everything all the time, but the majority of the “big stuff” is under our influence. Your thoughts are something you can control; you just have to work at it.
Many of us go through life not thinking the right thoughts and wondering why we can’t get where we want to go. Is this you?
Our thoughts influence us on so many levels. They are hidden in the corners of our minds, sometimes never being verbalized (or even recognized), but they are always there. The thought may have been planted by an experience we had when we were younger, or something somebody told us somewhere along the line – and it just stuck.
Have you ever had an idea or a dream that you told yourself that – for whatever reason – you could not accomplish? And then, of course, you didn’t. Well, that negative thought is a destructive little booger that needs to be banished from your brain. On the other hand, have you had a dream that you accomplished and weren’t sure how you managed? Yep, your thoughts impacted both outcomes.
Now I happen to believe that any thought I DO NOT take captive will turn around and take me captive. (That may sound a little woo woo, but hey, you’ve read this far, so keep reading!)
Taking thoughts captive includes both positive thoughts and negative thoughts. We all know people who think too much of themselves, right? And people who don’t think enough of themselves. So it goes in both directions. And people who generally think the worst will happen…and it usually does. And people who are generally optimistic and have what seems to be a “charmed” life.
I have learned that my recurring thought patterns, if left unchecked, will become the dominating argument of my mind. And somewhere along my path, I noticed that eventually I was becoming what the argument said I was. What? Read that again.
If left unchecked, your thoughts will become the dominating argument in your mind and you will become what the argument says you are.
So what do you want to be?
(Yes, I know, two quotes from Tony Robbins. BUT that man knows his stuff, y’all.)
In order to live the life you want, you must think thoughts that are aligned with your vision.
So what life do you want to design for yourself? Are your thoughts in line with it? Or are you silently sabotaging yourself with your doubting (or prideful) thoughts? These thoughts could show up as excuses as to why you can’t get to the gym, or get that promotion or why you will never see the Eiffel Tower. Or maybe you’re thinking you are smarter than your boss and s/he is the one holding you down.
Pay attention this week. And when you catch yourself with a thought that may not line up with who you want to be, or where you want to go, or what you want to do, or anything of the sort, grab it. Grab that thought right out of the air, examine it, and then re-work it. You may have to do this repeatedly with some thoughts, but eventually it will become easier. And when you change your thoughts, you WILL change your world. THIS post might help you with this practice too.
Give it a try. Leave me a comment below on how it goes.
