With literally hundreds of websites selling furniture, rugs, art and home accents, how is a busy homeowner able to navigate the web to shop for quality and affordable goods? From shipping policies to delivery options, online retailers offer many different options to attract more buyers to their site. After all, you can find the same item in various places , and sometimes with different pricing. Here are some tips to help you determine which sites have the best value and good business practices that will suit your needs.
If there is a physical store, go there. I know it defeats the purpose of shopping online, but visit the store if you need to sit on chairs and sofas before buying. Check their online purchase policy, as well. Sometimes you can get a better deal if you buy it online versus going to to their shop.
Order Samples. If finish and fabric samples are available, buy them! Most online retailers have a return policy if there is a fee for ordering samples. Plus, it’s much easier to return a sample than a sofa.
Read the reviews. Often times, other shoppers will leave a review that provides excellent information regarding the product. For instance, color. If you’re indecisive about an item, read the reviews before buying, just to give you a a better idea of what to expect. Often times, there are comments on quality and comfort, too.
See if the online retailer rates the manufacturer of the product. Wayfair has a rating system from “great value” up to “cherished heirloom” to give you an idea of quality and dependability of design.
If two different sites have the same item for sale, check the shipping fees. If free shipping is available from both sites, check out their return policy. That could be a deal breaker if it’s final sale or costly to return. Paying to return a large item could be expensive. Always keep that in mind when buying furniture, art and rugs online. Check out the shipping options, as well. You may have to pay extra to have it placed inside your home. Some online retailers provide information on the number of items in stock. Once again, check with return policy. If an item is low in stock, it might not be returnable. Always read the fine print!
Finally, ask questions! Take advantage of the question box most online retailers offer at the bottom of the page Ask a question in “Live chat” or send an email. Don’t forget to check for sales that are available for online purchases only, and save time and money, buying online.
