Our Go-to Steps for Styling Coffee Tables and Cocktail Ottomans

Cocktail ottomans and coffee tables typically serve the same purpose, they both anchor the furniture in a room, make a perfect spot for board games, provide a place to prop up your feet, and set down a drink or snack. So what is the best way to style these pieces that are so similar yet so different? Here are our steps for styling coffee tables and cocktail ottomans:

Select Your Anchor Piece

Typically the largest accessory, the anchor piece helps tie in all other selections together. Keep in mind, you don’t want to make it too big to overwhelm the table or ottoman- either by width or height. Most cocktail ottomans look fantastic with a large serving tray to serve as a table on the upholstered piece. We love the look of a square tray on a round ottoman, and vice versa. It adds both visual interest and can provide plenty of room for fun accessories.

Don't Forget to Add Stylish Books

Books are always the right accessory. Layering comes easy when books are involved, by adding height and width to the other pieces, or by themselves. Books do a great job of making massive coffee tables and ottomans feel intimate. Designer tip: when stacking books, it works best if they are the same size.

Add a Special Trinket or Two

Great design is all in the details. Adding a special memento can personalize the coffee table or ottoman and provide a great conversation starter. Designer tip: if you have a collection of smaller items, they won’t get lost or feel cluttered when arranged in a bowl.

Don't "Faux-get" about Greenery

Whether or not you have a green thumb, a live plant is always our first choice. However, we do love a good faux interpretation of a classic plant or flower! Greenery, of any kind, is the finishing touch to a great coffee table or cocktail ottoman accessory design. Not only does it soften the lines of the space, greenery and flowers bring the outdoors in, and a sense of freshness to any decor style.

No matter your design style, no matter if you prefer a coffee table or a cocktail ottoman, layering these pieces can turn a simple furniture layout into a design masterpiece. Bringing an anchor piece, and layering books and smaller accessories, along with plants, is an easy way to elevate your home and bring a “wow” factor to your living spaces.
